Perhaps we need a forum section to handle the lecturing and moralizing.

What's next: condemn everybody with a car on credit for the current state of the affairs?
Not everyone speeds just because we can, or have the courage. I understand there are consequences I would rather avoid. To say I don't speed would be a lie though. My point was if your car is so damn important to you then maybe keep your speeding to 5 over, or maybe even 10, but 25?

But you are right that it is not my place to just simply judge someone who is asking for advice. Although I love giving my opinion

WOW 25 over. That will most likely involve more than just points. If the judge does not lower, you are looking at reckless operation and the fine will cost a butt load. Good luck. Personally, I love hearing all the fibs or stories that people give me when I pull them over. I usually let them off when I hear the subject say 'Yeah, you got me'.
DO THE CRIME/PAY THE FINE.

Should your wife go to court, the story about going to see a brother in the hospital may not be forgoten. If she was driving a 2000 Audi A6 2.7 Turbo at night and claims to be disabled, this may also cause some problems depending on the type of disability. If this is a first time offense, then a lawyer may be able to reduce the points. However, if your wife is a repeat offender, then she may get suspended or revoked. A judge could even impose the maximum punishment, should she go to court without a lawyer. Since it was a state trooper and not the local police, your wife may get more points. Perhaps you need to talk with your wife about her risky behavior, before she has a high speed multi car accident.

Wow! You guys almost bring a tear to my eye. I'm surprised to see a big interest on this topic...

My thoughts: Chefro and Jeffla hit this one right on the money... If I speed often (and believe me I do) I can't cry if I get a speeding ticket. That said, if someone is disabled and they are speeding they MOST CERTAINLY should have the recognition NOT to go WAY outside the gray area. Doing 80 instead of 60 in a 55 is a HUUUUGE difference. Let's all be adults here, if you went over the speed limit by 5 or so miles then by all means fight it..but if you went over by 25 and you decide to fight it you're just looking for some sypathy here.

This isn't a case of bite the bullet and pay the ticket. It's a case of take some accountability and slow down the next time.

I have to appear on my own speeding ticket this coming Tuesday. They got me with laser going 88 in a 55 on a Sunday morning while driving out to the country to pick up pies for the wife. It is my first speeding ticket in more than 10 years. It was issued in a jurisdiction where the matters are not heard by a Court, but by a police department employee, so there is absolutely no plea bargaining. I have a very simple plan if the officer shows up and presents his case. It goes something like this, "Your Honor I did it, I am an idiot, I have no further explanation, I have my checkbook to pay whatever fine you impose". Luckily for me in New York State license suspensions don't start until you are 35 mph over, I missed a real problem by a measily 2 mph. Regardless, I am "manning" up for my mistake and I think that the original poster should do the same.

You asked for advice, not for a lecture. You noted that she is handicapped -- that can sometimes work in your favor with a sympathetic judge. If she normally uses a walker or some assistance, don't be afraid to use it. Also be honest -- they hear creative lies all day and unless you were about to give birth, speeding is no excuse. If money is not an object, hire a lawyer who handles speeding tickets. He'll know the rules about calibration and, more importantly, can sometimes bargain it down to a lower speeding number.

Bottom line, don't do the crime if you're not prepared to do the time. I speed a lot -- but only on the highway when the road is open. Never in traffic and never weaving in and out. Always use turn signals as a habit. I've been caught once in the past year doing 80+ and was honest -- I had missed a flight home and had to rent a car and was late and tired -- the cop wrote me for 5 over and I did not get the points, but it showed up on my record and my insurance went up. The only thing that saved my a$$ from being chewed by my wife is that she had gotten her first speeding ticket ever the month before....but it never showed up on her record.
