Ok, here is the symptoms:


After a good while of driving the car if i stop and iddle for a bit, the temperature gauge starts rising, mostly with the A/C, ive noticed that if i dont have my A/C running the gauge wont rise that much. Then if i start driving again then the temperature starts going down.

Im thinking it can maybe be something related to the fan switch or maybe the temp sensor.

have any of you had any problems like this?

its a 2000 Audi A6 Quattro Station Wagon, V6 2.8 30v

 

It is typical behavior - problem => maybe not.

Look at the thread "Fan redundancy" - might find interesting to read.

BTW- read the sticky "nubie rules" first.

 

the thing that worries me is that the temperature guauge raises a bit to high.

i just bought the car so im not familiar with problems like this, even though i had a 1999 vw passat which basically has the same motor. but i never really experienced any problems like these.

The first step im taking is changing the Coolant because it does look like its very old. maybe that will help a bit.

Water temperature should stay right dead center of the gauge. If it is going above, then you have some cooling system issue. Start by flushing out the radiator and replacing with fresh G12 and distilled water.

If the temperature fluctuates below the center point, then you have a stuck thermostat issue.

It also could be that the secondary fan is not kicking in.

 

You could also have a water pump on its way out. Do you have any prior service records for the car? When was the timing belt and water pump last replaced?

 

I second that.

Your engine is working harder with A/C on.
It is not getting enough circulation. Pump, Timing belt, Thermostat.

 

It's not your water pump, it's your fan. Or, one of them. You are not getting enough air past the radiator.

YA YA Bob has it --- I'd bet that one or both of your fans are not comming on.
