Default Timming Belt - How to check when replaced?

Hi Guys,
I just bought 2001 A6 4.2 -toy i always wanted to have.
Ihave a question.
The car has 81K miles.
How can i find out when or if the timming belt has been replaced. I dont have any records for the vehicle.
I dont want to take it to the dealer or mechanic yet - they always have huge list of things which need to be replaced no matter how old the car would be.

Thanks for all help.

Take off the passenger's side upper timing cover (cause its the easiest) and look at the belt. If you see whitish looking lines on the outside of the belt it hasn't been replaced and probably should be soon.

Not to steal this thread, but does the passenger side cover also apply to the 1998 2.8?

If you do a carfax, you can see the last registration city and state. Then call any/all Audi dealers and find out what maintinence they have done to the car. Also call all the local german import shops and ask for their service records as well. I was able to learn that my cats, t-belt, and a bunch of oil seals had already been replaced by doing this. Saved me from doing at-belt job just to be safe. I was lucky, there was an oil change sticker on the windshield from German Auto works, I called them up, gave them the vin and they gave me a huge list of items they had fixed. Do some homework.

Welcome to the forums.

Jeff
