Default Tiptronic slowly stopped working

Does anyone know of any problems with the tiptronic circuitry in older A6's. My tiptronic slowly stopped working and I beleive it to be the circuit board directly under the chrome shift plate. From my understanding there are only 2 components other than mechanical, that circuitboard and the black cardboard like cover that slides back and forth, covering between gears. A pretty honest guy at the dealer was helping me figure the problem and explained that they have a lot of the circuit boards in stock because it's a rather common replacement. Problem is the board is dealer $380 and the piece that slides is also dealer $60. The board is pretty much a one shot deal other than finding one from a salvage yard cheap. Has anyone ran into this problem before? My fluid has been changed in the transmission about 60k ago. If I have to bite the bullet and buy all new stuff the car is worth it to me. I'm new to this forum any insight would be greatly appreciated.
