Default Trans Trouble, help!

My 2003 AR has an interesting trans. I have an '01 A6 with the 2.7T motor, and I presume, the same transmission? Anyway, when I'm on the interstate at a 65/70 mph cruise, the trans is saying that I'm in 5th, but oddly, the motor is still turning at roughly 3k rpm. That just seems way too high, given that the A6 turns about 2,400/2,600 at the same mph. Any thoughts? This is killing my mileage also, roughly 15%.

Have you shifted the car from a stop all the way up to 5th so you know it's in 5th?

Maybe the torque converter isn't locking up. Do you have access to a vag-com?

I wouldnt automatically assume that the trans is the same in both cars. In fact I would be surprised if the gearing is the same, but idk. So that would be one thing to check. Also, since the problem is really with the AR, you need to ask someone else with an AR what RPMs they see at the same speed.

Maybe the lockup clutch is failing inside the TC, bad gas mileage is definetly an indicator of this
