I'm happy to report that I now have 230K on my Audi and have never changed the transmission fluid. I only added to it when I changed the radiator.

I just had toque converter failure at 70k!!! The fluid was BAD and I have a funny feeling if the fluid would have been replaced at 50k I wouldnt have had the problem.

CHANGE YOU FLUID EVERY 50K! It doesn't cost that much and its not difficult, swallowing the $2.8k bill for the toque converter is.

Guys PLEASE change your fluids! here are a few links to help your local mechanic:

1. life expectancy of the original fluid:

2. List of approved fluids for our ZF transmission (pg 4&5):

I forgot to mention that my car has 154,000 miles currently. Which means I have driven around 9,000 miles since the transmission fluid change. Since then I also have replaced : drivers catalytic converter, vac lines, suction y pump, fan clutch, electric fan, timing belt, water pump/seal, rollers, tensioners, crank seal, cam seals, vc gaskets, All coolant hoses, thermostat/seal, coolant resvovoir, power steering fluid, differentials fluid, and rear brake rotors and pads. I am about to replace all the abs sensors and maybe the abs module along with a brake fluid flush. The only upgrade i have added was an HID kit i got off ebay for $45. It converted my halogen headlights to the xenon/HID.

Yep, I'm the FNG that's gonna revive an old thread.
Chevro, how is your tranny doing? I had to pull my radiator to unclog it (mixed coolant) and have to top off tranny fluid now, so I'm researching how to change it. This thread has helped, Thanks!

+1 for changing transmission fluid & filter

Today had the above done on my 121k mi 2002 A6 avant qtr 3.0L. The difference is day and night. I used to drag the dog all the time now the dog is pulling the leach energetically. Old fluid is very dark color, old filter is dated 2002 came with new car. I think the tranny oil change should be done around 60k mi. or so.

Make sure to use the right stuffs & correct procedure. Do not use JiffyLube on this one. Find independent garage specialized in Audi by google search AUDI + "your state",,, for me it is AUDI MA, a map will list all those you need, skip the dealers.

The transmission is still doing good after 12,760 miles... Before not too long I'll change the fluid one more time for extra piece of mind.
And yes, I'll still use Synthetic Mobil1 Multi-Vehicle which revived my ZF box.

i have 97 A6, after changing fluid and filter I test drive it and it shifts good, next morning I started car and after about 30 seconds it start to hear groaning sound, what could it be? low fluid or overfilled. once it warms up for about 5-10 minutes noise disappears.
