You have to pull the engine to replace a compressor housing seal??????

Wait a minute, what seal? There is an o-ring (the word you used) on the inlet pipe to compressor housing but the outlet is a rubber hose and a hose clamp. The inlet pipe o-ring should be replaceable in-situ. Same for the outlet rubber hose. Who is telling you you have to pull the engine to do this job? Unless there was smoke pouring out the rear of the car or there were little metal pieces in the intake, I wouldn't replace those turbos. As you said, there is nothing wrong with them. Replace the seal and save your money for the other repairs you are going to have to make.

Bob

The seal that needs replaced is located inside the turbo once u unbolt the compressor cover on the cold side of the turbo.
Nobody told me i HAD to do anything... the turbos have 76xxx miles on them and if im in trying to unbolt the turbo i mught as well replace both.
U sound like a cocky backyard mechanic trying to make an 3xample of someone on a forum by making assumptions.
If it was the inlet seal or a coupler i would have replaced it a long time ago. Once i pressure test the system..the air pours out of the cold side of the driver turbo... around where the compressor cover bolts on to the center of the turbo. If you would like a drawing i would gladly supply you with one. I am asking for help o-n things i am unsure of... not advice on what u think might be wrong with my car from your living room computer.
I sourced the problem...help me fix it or GTFO.

Mr. ThinSkin,

Again, "o-ring" was your word, not mine. From the drawing, which I consulted before shooting off my fingers, the ONLY o-ring shown is the o-ring on the cold side intake tube to turbo inlet housing.

Now that you have supplied us with more complete information (i.e. "Once i pressure test the system..the air pours out of the cold side of the driver turbo... around where the compressor cover bolts on to the center of the turbo"), we can be more helpful, if you aren't going to take it personally. Now, do you want help or do you want to wallow in your misery and self-pity and lash out at those who offer? Here is the advice - you can change the compressor housing seal with the turbo on the car.

Well, when i stopped by the audi dealer to chat with one of the techs, i used the word "seal" for the compressor housing.
He proceeded to use the word "o-ring" , a rubber ring shaped like the letter 0.

i assume he was correct, so i started to call it an o-ring as well, for that is what made the most sense i guess, but who would hire a tech at the audi dealer and expect him to use the wrong "lingo"

look, I was fine until i was approached like i know nothing.
I would like to keep the vehicle for a long time, and with the turbos having close to 77,000 miles on them, and having this particular (and odd) issue makes me think that things are just plain starting to fail on them.

I am unsure of how the vehicle has been treated before, but i got it in working condition and have not beat it to cause serious issues like this.

I was told by multiple people to get to the turbos and properly maintain/replace them, i will need to pull the motor. By looking underneath and taking things off to get to the front of the turbo, i noticed that i cannot safely remove/replace parts on that particular side, and that i needed to remove the motor/trans to replace the turbos, check the oil lines, and go on my merry way.

my simple questions in the OP were sort of answered and i thank you for that. But your e-attack on my opinion and your rude approach to "what the issue is" is what bothers me. I never had such problems simply asking a question and having a friendly answer in return. I've belong to a lot of forums over the years and i simply don't want to have someone come in a thread that needs input about a certain problem, and receive name calling and questions as to "why you have to do this?" "obviously you don't have to remove the motor"

well, obviously i had decided to remove and replace both turbos, the driver side is leaking air around the housing and under any moderate boost makes a noise (like a shaft vibrating) No dentist whine, and no smoke whatsoever, (just a small amount of "soot" im guessing from it running a bit rich, smells like fuel out the exhaust pipe a little bit but nothing major.

now, if there is anyone willing to give input as to what i can do to fix this, thanks, if not i guess il have to figure it out on my own.
