Upper control arms and future maintenance cost?

Upper control arms and future maintenance cost?
My car is a 2000 Audi A6 two wheel drive with only69,000 miles. Car is paid for.
I replece the oil & filter every 3,000 with a Bosch filter and Mobil 1 synthetic oil and drive the car very easy. Normally, when something needs to be repaired I take care of it right away.
I just spent $750.00 for brake rotors and pads for all four wheels.
Service shop brought to my attention that the upper control arms need to be replaced because the rubber bushings are cracked which I saw for myself. They said that you don't need to replace right now, but should replace in near future. They quoted $780.00.
How does the worn upper control arm bushingseffect my car regarding safety and handling? Does it effect uneven tire wear?
The handling seems fine.
I know that I will have to replace the timming belt, tensioners and water pump at 80,000 miles which is going to be expensive.
I have already replaced the tie rods about 10,000 miles ago.
I love the ride and handling of my A6, but the maintenence cost are starting to mount up.
Can anyone tell me what other costly things will need to be repaired at x.... number of miles in the future; i.e. transmission, engine, suspension, etc.
Thanks for your feedback.
