Urgent! Steering rack leaking fluid!
Hey, all.
As of tonight, I've got a new problem with the A6. I'm losing massive ammounts of power steering fluid from the power steering rack. It's all leaking out of the boot at the end on the right side of the car. I filled the resevoir, turned back and forth a few times, and had to refill the resevoir.
Clearly, worst case would be needing to replace the entire rack, but due to the nature of it, I'm going to have to bring to the dealer.
Is there any chance that it wouldn't need to be completely replaced?
Does anyone have any ideas of what the cost would be and how much time it would spend in the shop, provided the whole thing needs to be replaced?
I was really hoping to drive the car on Saturday for my wedding, but I've got a feeling that I'm pretty deep in the hurt box on this one.
Is there any hope??

I'm currently suffering from a similar problem.
Have a look at this post:

I've seen list prices for around 1200 USD, discounted to around 900 USD, but you will be plesantly surprised by the ones someone else posted on this site. See the links in the post.
Good luck for the wedding.
Steering rack is shot...
Dealer quoted me at $1,200 for the part, and 8.5 hours of labor, not including the alignment.
$2,100! Also, apparently the ABS controller is shot. I'm starting to wonder if the car is worth putting that much into!
Some days I just can't catch a break![:@]

You can get a rebuilt rack from www.blauparts.com. You can get a rack seal kit from www.rockauto.com. You need the Audi shop manual CD. You may get the CD manual for less at www.themotorbookstore.com or at www.motorbookguy.com .You may need to flush the old power steering fluid.
For a power steering flush try: http://www.audipages.com/Tech_Articl...r/psflush.html, which is for an A8, butmay besimilar to an A6.
Do a search of the forum for "power steering ruin".

A6HCW mentioned. It is not all as bad as it seems. Even if you go to an indy with a rebuilt rack at a cost of 400, fixing will be probably half the price of the dealer. Should make it much more economical to fix.
Here is the link again for the steering rack at 315 dollar.http://www.powersteeringpros.com/add.../80-00768.html
Even dealerships sometimes require core returns, so this is not a big deal.
I'm sorting out the same issue in the next week or so.
