As the subject line says.
I removed the battery from my 1998 A6 Quattro 2.4 the other day. Behind the battery I found a small hose that was loose in on end. The other end was hard to see.

What is the function of the hose?
Is it supposed to be loose? If not, where should it attach?

It looks like the hose that attaches to the vent on the battery.

 

The vent being something that exists on a stock battery?
So with an after market battery I just leave the hose?

 

My replacement battery (non-Audi dealer) had a port for this hose to attach.

 

If you get the proper replacement battery it will come with the battery vent tube.

 

Actually, the replacement may not come with the tube itself but will have the vent port.
