Default Where to fix a cracked rim?

Hi all,

I have a 99 Avant and one of my rims got cracked from a wonderful Chicago pothole. Kept losing air in the tire and it turned out to be a hairline crack in the rim seen from the inner side. I have a friend that is a welder and says that he could weld the crack for me, is this recommendable? What kind of concerns should I have doing this? Or otherwise, what else could I do, or where else to go? Thanks!

Do you have the 6-spoke OEM design?

If you do, you can buy one for around $ 75-85 - shipping included, and if the friend repairs the cracked one you can make that one into a full-size spare.

If it's not repaired right, it could fail under speed. I would strongly suggest you find a used rim.

True, might as well spend a little more and just find a rim, do it once, instead of 3x the amount.

I had a BMW rim welded with no issues. I had a shop do it (Pro Wheels in Detroit) as they need to find the end of the crack, drill a hole to stop the crack from spreading, then weld it up. The shop also repainted the rim. All for $100.

I had two cracked rims repaired and still ride on them today.they are alluminum and cost about $100.00 per rim average cost during my research.the only thing that you must do is make sure you put the repaired rim on rear of vehicle, in case of failure you do not lose steering. Dee-balto.md.
