I have a 2001 4.2 A6 I was wondering if this grill would fit?

No. The 4.2 has a wider body than the other C5s. If you find one for as S6 or RS6 they would fit, but only the top grill.

The bottom grill from the C5 S6 will fit on the 4.2 but the RS6 bottom grill is very different.

Couldnt find an S6 bottom grill so I looked up retrofitting the RS6 grill and found this (http://search.audiworld.com/showthread.php?t=1719369) it seems fairly simple and looks pretty good any opinions?

 

I've seen both top and bottom RS6 grills on sale on ebay as a set. Works out slightly cheaper than buying seperately.

I do worry when they list a V8 3.7 engine though....

I don't know where the cheapest place to get them would be. If you do end up ordering some, let me know where from and how much. I too am contemplating as my current top grill has a break in it.

 

The cheapest ones Ive found are in the exact link you posted so far but Im still looking until I have the money to do it in a month or two.
