Default Winter tire clearance to suspension - how much

I just put winter tires on my 2003 A6 and I have about 3/8 of an inch clearance on the top inside before the suspension parts. Seems tight - not rubbing.....but kind of makes me nervous.

What is the proper Audi factory clearance tolerance for this fitment?

OR Do I need shims? I am using 235 45 R17 General Tires. (German made -BTW)
THANKS

You must be talking about the front end. I'm running the same size Pirelli's and have about 1" clearance to the suspension piece. That whole suspension pivots at the frame, so there is no way the tire can hit the piece -- they move together. If you're talking the rear end, there is no overhanging suspension piece.
