Default Worn Brake light on/how much?

I've had a 2004 A6 S-Line 2.7t for 4 months now. I love it. In the past three weeks the Worn Brake light has come on. In my research, I've discovered that this warning seems to be for the front brakes only. The area Audi Dealer has quoted me $500-$550 for the repair. Am I getting the wool pulled over my eyes? Also, is it necessary to go to a dealer of certified Audi-Shop to have repairs done i.e. computer to release the calipers?

Thanks for your help!

You need front brake pads and possibly rotors. If the dealer is including replacing rotors for the amount, then it is a good price. If you are mechanically inclined and have tools ready, you can do it yourself for about $250 or so.

Sometimes it is better to have a mechanic deal with it.

You need vagcom to release the rear calipers on newer models. I am not sure whether 2004 was electronic e-brake or not, so I can't comment for sure.

I'll give you a price comparison from my indie shop here in SW Michigan. 18 months ago: replaced front and rear pads, replaced rear rotors, turned front rotors = $545.

Default Thanks.

Great info and comparison. I would hope my quote included rotors, but does the warning light indicate both rotors and pads?

Light is just for the pads. Rotors are one of those "last forever unless they don't" type items. If you know what I mean?
