Hi, i'm a NOOB, but i do read the threads. I purchased an 01 avant quattro wagon 2.8 w/92xxx miles in March. From day one it had an oil leak, i took to indy he did brakes, change back valve cover gasket, full tune-up @900, Still leaking...thus far i have changed the timing belt and the water pump @500...i'm starting to feel like i purchased a LEMON...O btw i just changed the right axle on monday @400...thats only in 5mos...@ this rate I will be relocating to the trunk of this car...My question is can I take this dealer to small claims n try 2 re-coupe some of these expenses..which i believe he def were aware of? can someone tell me by the vin# if this car was maintained well #WAULH64B01N159249 thanx

as i write this it is now in the shop having the back valve covers done both sides...fingers crossed

 

The leak will be from the cam seals. More big bucks to replace. You still have control arms, tie rod ends, steering rack, the other axle, the wheel bearings to change. Then, your transmission will go. Audi's are nice cars but VERY expensive to maintain. Unless you can do the work yourself, dump the car.

Timing belt and water pump job for $500? First I would really question your mechanic. Proper parts alone will run you $400 or so. In addition, as Bob said, the oil leak is probably from the cam seals or the cam chain tensioner seals. Front cam seal should have been replaced when the timing belt job was being done. It adds 15 minutes to the job and less than $20 on parts. Rear ones should have been replaced with the valve cover. Cam chain tensioner gaskets the same...

The issues that you encountered are normal for our cars at that mileage, with exception to the axle. Audis (and any European luxuries) are not cheap to maintain.

With that said, I would really make sure that your mechanic knows what his doing with your Audi.

 

To answer your lemon question...

Everyting you mentioned is common on an Audi with 93K, especially when there are questions about the mechanic doing thing correctly.
You can expect to spend another $1-2,000 in the near future. Ever hear about DIY??
