Default Your Input Needed on 4.2 Tip Possible Trans problem.

I have a 2004 Allroad with the 4.2 in it - 90k. Lately I have been experiencing some vibration or rather a shutter after it shifts from 2 to 3. The shutter seems to be more pronounced if you drive it harder. It doesn't seem to do it when using the TIP...although I had a couple hesitations or "jerks" in between 2-3 a couple times recently. I am going to drop the car off at a local mech that specializes in Audi to check the fluid level and possibly have them replace the fluid. I am just curious if this is transmission related or possible electrical since it does sort of resemble a bad coil pack. I'm hoping that it may just be low fluid? Anyone had this sort of symptom?

Thanks!

I have felt that same problem in mine.

It doesn't do it if shifted in tiptronic only in D.

I think it's some sort of TCM issue.

Please post your findings. I'm sure we are not the only ones with this problem.

Thanks
Jack

Got a 2002 4.2 and I have noticed something similar ever since I had the car 3 years ago. Sometimes under load in between 2nd and 3rd gear I can see the rpm needle drop 500 rpm without it shifting (shifting drops about 1000rpm).
If I floor it and rev it up even going up hills, it doesn't do it.

Default Tune to Stage 1 will

◦Lower End Hesitation (Lag) Removed

Performance Software - 2000-2004 Audi A6 4.2L 300HP

I installed Stage-1 to my 3.0L and the frequent tranny jerk from rolling stop to accelerate again is basically disappeared.
It has 30-day try to ensure you like it.
The installer told me not one come back so far.

I'll let you know what my mech finds. I'm bringing it in next week for a tranny look-over and possible fluid change. I am also getting a APR Stage 1 upgrade to the 4.2. This was the concern I has, because I know the tip can be very ornery with the torque increase.

Yeah I thought a long time about the stage 1 but after reading all the trouble with the tranny I didn't want to risk the increased torque to fry it. Also the boost is no more then 10% which is not really that much thinking about how much money you spent and the increased risk of the tranny breaking.

Anyhow, I replaced the tranny fluid about 10k ago and added a "conditioner" but that did not get rid of the problem described.

Yeah.. I wonder if there is big difference in engines in your car vs. mine. - according to my reading the Allroad 4.2 is the S4 motor tuned down to 300hp. - What is the stock HP in your A6?

This is APR's quote on the allroad.

The APR ECU upgrade typically raises the power output of the 4.2 to 340 horsepower and 302 lb-ft of torque on 91 octane fuel with 352 horsepower and 312 lb-ft of torque on 93 octane fuel!

I don't see how the HP increase in my 3.0 would hurt the trany I don't drive like an animal so a 20hp increase I'll never notice anyway.

For $350 I do believe I'll try it. That jerk and drop is sure as heck not doing anything good to my trany that's for sure.

Thanks for that link- good info!

what is it some sort of dongle that plugs in?

I think the ECU upgrade is done through the OBDII port.

I also see that the A6 4.2 has the timing belt vs. the Allroad/S4 4.2 has the rear dual timing chain..and I think the S4 has a different intake..That along with exhaust and tuning gives them the extra 40hp.
