Default A8 MMI issue

2006 A8

I currently have my car in the shop because the MMI died all the sudden. No warning or nothing one day the pop up screen went down and decided not to come back out. The car runs fine but the radio and everything controlled by the MMI is dead. The dealer has already put in 3 hours and doesnt know what it is yet. I was told they replaced the control unit that wasn't the problem they checked one computer and another one and that didnt fix it. They said its not getting power through the system for some reason. What Im wondering is if anybody can tell me whether there's a amount of time this should take? Im pretty much at the mercy of the dealer if they decide they wanna rob me im already about $660 bucks in.

Well if they have already charged you for a repair and that didn't fix it, then the remaining repair should be on the dealer. Don't let them add more crap to your bill, once they attempt a repair, its thier bad. Thats not a common problem, usually the MMI unit goes out, which is probably what they replaced. If there is no fault codes in the system, then it may be a little difficult to diagnose. Just hold tight, they can't charge you anymore money, thats not gonna stop them from trying though.....

thanks for that info Audi tech they said it is the main control unit that they have to replace. It is $1229. I cant believe it! they say they never see this problem which is why it took them so long to figure it out. The part# is 4E0 910 731 BX. Then they are gonna charge me another hour of labor above the 2 i already have to pay for when the part actually arrives. Is there anyway to get this part cheaper? Some suggestions anyone?

I wouldn't pay them another 2 hours of labor. Im gonna guess they don't get too many A8's in their shop because the $1,200 MMI unit is a common replacement amongst A8's and it shouldn't have taken them that long to figure it out. If they would have called techline like they should of they would have repaired it hours ago. I would refuse to pay the extra labor, and i would ask for half off the price of the MMI unit. Thier actions are a result of lack of knowledge and good repair practices. Its not something that never happens to A8's, thats a load of crap.

You can ask the dealer to pay for half the part.
