there are a couple reasons you could be getting a lean code. are you using a generic OBDII scanner or do you have a VAG specific scanner? either way, posting the exact code or codes can be helpful in narrowing down the problem. a VAG specific scanner is preferable.

we do have a good collection of Connecticutians(?) around the forums. I suspect you can find someone with vagcom not too far from you. Best guess at this point is that you are having some kind of metering issues. could be the MAF or O2. the next option is a fueling issue FPR or fuel pump or filter.
is the car running like it is having problems? try to clear the codes and see what, if anything comes back. sometimes codes get stored and will still read, even though the problem is resolved.

Thanks and apologize for the delay as Iam new to forums in general..These 2 codes have been with me for well over a year no negative drivability issues.ive cleared them only to have the same 2 every time. December 2011 my Christmas gift to myself was a fuel pump replacement (I almost cried) I figured that was my initiation.I Didnt replace the fuel filter, never got around to it since this was the daily driver.Mass air and O2 sensor never triggered the CEL.I brought it to the same shop who performed the fuel pump work for the lean codes and they wanted to change the IDLE AIR CONTROL directly behind the intake manifold(its covered by the engine cover underneath the four rings) they couldn't guarantee that would solve it.How can I link up with local guys who dose VAG work..

hopefully on of the A8 gurus will chime in. I seem to remember something about a "mechanical flap thing" on the 4.2 where the plastic arms that move the flap are prone to breakage. sounds very much like what the shop said they want to try replacing.
there is a thread on here somewhere that has a list of folks that have a vag-com scanner and are willing to help others out.
