Audi A8 Spare Key

Audi A8 Spare Key
Can somebody please help me out here,
I have a 2004 Audi A8 4.2 Quattro (bought privately) and I only received 1 key with it. I ordered a spare (cut) key from Audi but the dealer says that there is something wrong with the integral system that won't allow the new key to be programmed. He has offered to fix this problem, if, I in turn am preparedline his pockets to the tune of£700. Being Scottish, I am of course a bit sceptical of his apparent intention. The original key that i got with the car still works fine. Does anyone know of a way that I can try this out for myself, in other words, do I need a dealer to program the new key.
Thanks

RE: Audi A8 Spare Key
The dealer does have to program the new key and also your old key at the same time for them both to work in the car. I recently had to order a new key for my wife's Q7 because she lost the other. However, it cost about $140US for the replacement key and the programing charge. I have not replaced my A8 key, but should be the same expense.

RE: Audi A8 Spare Key
Just bought a spare key for a 2002 A8 from Street Keyes.com.It was not the cheapest I could find. Had It programmed by one of their recommended locksmiths for $75 bucks and have had no problems at all. Total $110. As an aside the locksmith said the cost was too high forthe key. He pays maybe $15 so I would guess that the cheaper keys on EBay or the like will be fine. You just have to call around to find a locksmith to program and cut it.
