I am brand new to this forum stuff so please bare with me.
I am looking at 1998/1999/2000/2001 A8's with 40 to 75k miles. someone told me to look at 2001 or newer as the older ones had tranny problems. Is this a true statement. What are some other prominate problem area's andrepair costsin these years.

I've owned a 2001 since Jan of 2005 and havehad no transmission problems. It had 30k on it when purchased and has about 63k now. What a machine! I bought mine Cert. Pre-owned so the warranty had just run out. There have been no real problems. It's been more reliable than my old "93 740iL. I am blessed with a dealer close by and a very good German car private mechanic as well.
Find a good one a go for it.

 

Tranny issues are less prominent on the facelift model the earlier ones did suffer but so long as the ATF has been changed regularly it should be OK
