Multiple mis-fire codes on 2007 4.2
I'm helping my father-in-law with some issues he is having on his 2007 Q7 4.2 P0300, P0301, P0302, P0308 and other mis-fire codes. He ended up buying a new coil pack (only 1) but once he told me what was going on, I pulled the codes and determined it's most likely a plug issue, not a coil issue.
I pulled the plugs and they were NGK laser platinum plugs but I couldn't tell if they were a 5547 or 5592. The plugs looked very fouled, like it's running fat, but there wasn't any carbon build up, it just looked like it wasn't getting hot enough so I'm thinking that whoever put those plugs in (it was bought used), used the NGK 5592 which is a step colder than the 5547.
I ended up putting in some AC Delco double platinum plugs with single a electrode gapped at 0.035 (NGK's were not available) to get it going again as I believe that the plugs were the issue. But, I don't know anything about Audi, so is it common for the coil packs to go out and cause a mis-fire? Is there something further up the line to check? I saw a blip about a PCM update to fix mis-fire issues, but didn't look into it.
