Well I can see a turbo keep spinning if there is nothing to slow it down and I think that is what the back pressure does but you dont want too much back pressure, but this is what I have seen in an article about small turbos. Now bigger turbos they say you can use a 3 inch exhaust. If I understand this right the turbos spinning is created by the exhaust airflow which is why you want it free to a degree, but if there is nothing to restrict the flow then the turbo just keeps spinning and this would cause damage to the turbo. Now again this is what I have read but I am curious as to wheather this is right or not as I will be doing a new exhaust on my new TT when I get it. Now I have heard that a 3 in downpipe into a 2.5 exhaust is good too.
WASTEGATE!!!!THe wastegate is what controls boost, the downpipe is just part of the exhuast,

Well smartass I was just wondering about this as I have read in articles that say the oppposite of what has been sasid here and I was just doing some researchso as to get things right when I do the exhaust on my next car. As I said in my postsI wasnt sure but was getting conflicting news and was trying to see if itapplied to our cars. And I think it is like the article said you have to get a good combination between the two thats right for your car. But thanks for the input from the rest of youwhoposted like adults.

Well I cant say I was giving adcive cuz I was asking questions about this and just posting the article that I read about the whole thing. Im not one of those people that think they know everything and post like I do. I read, do some research and ask questions and make up my mind from there. So where you might know some things I doubt that the people who write these articles are ignorant as this is what they do for a living and are working for major companies. From what I have been able to find out a bigger exhaust might not kill your turbo, it looks like it could hurt the over all life of the turbo. And Im sure there is a point where a bigger exhaust on a small could actually take away from the performance and that is where you need to find the right compromise as too size. Plus why pay extra for a bigger exhaust if its not needed. Now you might need one cuz you plan to upgrade to a bigger turbo, cool, but I was trying to find out the right size for a smaller turbo. Beleive it or not I listen to what everyone in here says and I do research on it, so Cincy I do take what you have to say into consideration as you might have come across some things that others might not have. So thanks all.

not sure what you meant FXRocket....
I mean, cant we just use a downpipe from the same motor in the VW? There are a few aftermarket pipes for those, what keeps them from working on my FWD tt?

By advice from GIAC the guy that did my chip I bought a downpipe that was for a VW (cant remember which VW) and it fit perfectly and was cheaper than most. I think I paid $295 for it with a highflow cat on it.

All fwd cars use the same downpipe, hit up ebay and get one for about $100. If you need acat, get one from 42dd or get your stock one open to 2.5 or 3".

The best exhaust for a turbo car is no exhuast. This doesnt mean a 4" will give more power than a 3". You just need to make it large enough to remove the restricion of the exhaust flow. A 3" will be more than enough than what just about everyone on this forum will need. 2.5" will be good enough for stock turbos but a 3" is always better if you want to go bigger in the long run.
