Default 2001 TT fan problem

My sons 2001 TT quattro A/C quit one day last May, he has been living with it since due to no $. Some time, not sure when, the fans stopped working, totally. We live in North Texas, hotter than hell. We can drive it all day long on the freeway and pretty much anywhere as long as we don't stop for long because the temp starts to creep up.

The temp control sensor, drivers side fan and fan control module were replaced 11 months ago by an Audi guy who is no longer in business.

We have it with a local guy that we trust now and today he put in a new fan control module on my request, didn't help. He tore into it and found some shorted wires etc. He now has both fans working on one speed but neither works two speeds though he is getting both a high and a low speed signal from the temp sensor and the fan switch.

He is pretty confident that the A/C is not kicking on due to low freon so his next step is to charge the system and see how that works and what it effects.

Any help you can provide would be great.

If you are willing to take your car to Canton, about 60 miles east of Dallas, you will find one of the most competent Audi mechanics in the region, and the most reasonable labor rates I have found.
