2001 tt question about which oil to use...
OKAY i live in a rural part of new york state, just got my tt 1.8t...took it for an oil change and they put in regular 10w30,mechanics around here dont know very much about this car and neither do I... can someone please tell me what kind of oil to run, I"m sure this cant be right, please be as specific as possible...thank you very much
From what I have gathered by asking similar questions, either 5-30 or 5-40 should be fine.
Furthermore, because it is turbocharged you should only use pure synthetic oil.
Because it is normally colder during the winters up there, I would use 0w-40 in the winter to ease the motion of the rotating parts. I live in WV and I use Royal Purple synthetic 5w-30.
Oh yea, I should also mention that the oil you choose should be either 505 or 508 rated oil (I think those numbers are correct. Could someone please clarify?)
Lastly, if you go with 0w-40 for the winter, I HIGHLY recommend switching back to a higher weight for the summer as thinner oil experiences viscosity breakdown much quicker than heavier oil. It also breaks down much more (obviously), so the lubrication abilities are hindered resulting in more wear on your internals.
In case your wondering (Knowledge is power!), viscosity breakdown is essentially this. When liquids are heated to a certain temperature (the specific temperature will vary depending on the liquids physical and chemical properties), the molecules begin to separate, loosening the bonds and forming a thinner physical state. It's actually quite neat how it works, but is a huge pita when it comes to important stuff like oil. haha

You should use oil meeting VW502.00 standard. The most common oils that you can get easily from local auto stores that meet those specs are Castrol Syntec (full syn) 5w-40 or Mobile 1 0w-40. There is alot of better oil out there, but those two are the most accessible. Also make sure you use a high capacity oil filter as 1.8t's have had sludge problems. Jon, I am not completely disagreeing with you, but both 5w40 and 0w40 have the same viscosity at operating temperature. The only difference is the oil would be thinner or thicker at cold engine temps.
