2002 TT - Catalytic Converter Blew... Need Advice ASAP!
Hey all! Well I just bought a 2002 6 Speed TT a few weeks ago on a private sale and the catalytic converter blew (best guess). It has 81,500 miles so it looks like the warranty is out! I am pretty much a novice on cars so I did a little research and made some calls. I found a local shop here in South Florida that had pretty good reviews and deals mainly with imports ("Foreign Affairs"). I was told they could replace it with an after market unit and weld it on for around 600 plus 100 to do the computer diagnostics. That seemed "reasonable" but I wanted to see if anyone had any thoughts on this.
Is it bad not to get the OEM unit? Are there things to look out for? Questions I should ask? you opinions?
Anything else that would help this newbie feel a little better about his 2 week old purchase would be welcome!
I am planning on having it towed this afternoon...
Thank you all!

The awd models have a twin cat setup stock. Guess they would have to eliminate the entire 2 pipe section to remove the cats. For $650 you can get a 42dd http://42draftdesigns.com/categories...s/tt225dp.html dp with a cat if you must run one. Cheaper if you dont need to.

Thanks - Once again being the newbie on cars here would there be a problem if I had to remove the 2 pipe section? I just want the car to run the same, it's not a huge deal for me to be "non authentic". If it is a twin cat setup can they just replace the broken one or is it an all in one unit?
Man this stuff is confusing if you never worked it before. I have been the "computer guy" for over a decade and now I know how everyone feels when hey are asking me questions and I try to explain to "basics" - I'm more humble stating today

It pays to run the computer codes I guess. The "local" guy said it was the 100 percent the cat but after I brought it to a "real" repair shop they hooked up the computer and found out it was the 3 and 4 ignition coils that went bad! Unless something else turns up I think this is a lot easier and cheaper than I was told it would be (that never happens!) - For some reason Audi USA tells me that although my car does seem to be a match for the recall for the coils, my VIN was not listed and it probably wasn't built with the defective coils ... Anyway thank you all for your input..
