Default Access to Gear Selection Signal

Hi, I'm part of a team that is working on a 2004 Audi TT with DSG. We are trying to access the signal that indicates which gear (1 through 6) the car is currently in. Does anyone know what electronics would output such a signal? We know that the display in the instrument cluster displays such information, but it's probably part of a digital signal that has to be decoded. We are looking for some straightforward way to detect the current gear selection. We also looked into hardware that reads diagnostic codes, but we don't think gear can be read that way.

If anyone has any ideas, please email me or reply here. Thanks in advance!

The www.ross-tech.com vag-com software would probably have access to whichever block needs to be read.
Where are you located? If I can find it, theres a website with a list of people across north america willing to let people use their vag-com cable, if you only need it for a one time shot.
