Short and sweet here.

Car died. Tried to jump it and it would die again. Battery light was on.

Went and bought a battery and installed. Car started, but battery light was still on. Car idled funny. I'm thinking alternator now.

Any suggestions?

Ofcourse test the alternator first. It should put out 14.4VDC, if not replace it. Otherwise check to make sure the battery terminals are tight, this seams like a common problem.
