Default big problemo with my linkage

so i start heading to work yesterday, made it about a mile from my house. go to enter 4th gear and it has a hard time getting into the gear (i've had this problem in the past, feels like something is in the way of the gate) so i do my usual thing and reef it into there...when i go to shift to 5th it would not pop out under normal pressure, i bumped it a few times before finally just giving it a good whack! and then nothing...no gate pattern, no shifting into any other gears, i can just go in circles with my shifter..
i took off the boot and looked down in there and it just looks like the shifter is floating around on in that plastic ball thing..i cant feel any gate pattern or anything..
can anybody give me a good idea as to what happend? and what i need to fix?

btw 2000 tt 180hp fwd

thanks guys!

bump

well im at the point now where i have the whole shifter box dropped out the bottom of the car..and now im trying to figure out how to get the cables disconnected off the pivot ***** up near the tranny. does anybody have any tips for this? do they just pop off?
oh and i am so lucky to have found a used shifter box assembly on ebay for 75 bucks..matching parts number and everything..

so any advice on popping those cables off and after i get the new shifter box in what kind of procedure will i have to go through to adjust the shifting? does the bently manual give a run down on this?
cheers guys and happy easter!!!

cant help you with the install, but i can tell you that the same thing happened to my MK4 GTI right before i sold it. the shifter would go around and around and not go into gear. turned out it was some sort of plastic thing on the bottom of the shift lever assembly that needed replacement. not expensive.

also happened on my 85 bmw 325e a while back. it was something called a "guibo" AKA the same thing.... neither of these cars cost more than 100-200 bucks to get it fixed. i dont know whats up with the TT in that department though....

good luck!
