I used the clothes pin method. You take the clothes pins apart and then carefully put them in the slot between the two housings. Take a small hammer or whatever you have handy and slowly tap on each one going around in a circle. Thats how I did it if that helps at all.

I used2 flatheadscrewdrivers to pry it apart. I also had to get a flashlight in there to see how the barbs grabbed. It took a bit of work, and I thought it was going to break - i couldn't break it.

The vent ring will fall off so dont worry, you didn't break it (i hope). It actually glues back on.

It really is a matter of grunt and finesse. Clothes pins, screwdrivers,, keep prying and eventually you'll dislodge the barbs/tangs that hold together. It seems you'll break it, but it's pretty tough. Once you get it apart, it will seem apparent.

i just hope you dont crack the gauge housing, then you will have a dead gauge. Please tell me that you used flat tips and not pointed to hold it in place.

I simply saw no point in buying a vent ring that would restrict airflow more with extra flat edges. To me, this just made sense.
