Default cam timing

Has anyone here ever been told by their mechanic that their cams need to be retimed? My mechanic, who really knows Audis, told me that the factory cam timing on TTs is marginal at best, and with wear and tear and chain stretch my cams need to be retimed. My engine began to run very rough and he told me that the cam timing finally got so bad he would have to retime them. 2001 225 tt quattro coupe.

Is it a VR6? If so, you can't really "retime" the cams, the stretched chains need to be replaced.

If it's a 1.8L same thing on the chain at the back of the cams but have rarely seen a problem with those.

It's the 1.8. He may be replacing the chain. I'm not sure. I'll be getting the car back this week. I'll post the results.
