Default CD Changer Acting Up

Hi all. I took a drive down to Phoenix a few days ago (13 hour drive for me), and about an hour before we hit Phoenix, the cd changer started acting up. It will do its pre-load, where it loads each cd momentarily, but when it comes to loading any cd for actual play, it does CD1 ERR1, and moves on to the next cd, each of which give the same error. Any ideas? It's seriously killing me. Thirteen hour drive back from Phoenix with no music except what the radio could occassionally offer was a nightmare.

I tried searching, but wasn't able to find the same problem.

Thanks!

Gonna have to find a manual. Theres 3 errors it'll post, one's for dirty cd's, one's for a dirty laser lens, and one's for a jam or something. I'm not sure which is which, but I'd guess a good lens cleaning is a sensible place to start.

Thanks. I thought I didn't have a manual for the stereo system, but when I pulled everything out and went through it again, I found it. It says ERR1 is for dirty cd's, but I've tried changing my cd's, blowing out dust from the cartridge and changer, etc. Seems like it may need a lens cleaning after all. Time to look for a kit of some sort.

Thanks again!

The CD changers are known for failing, but try cleaning it first.

My second choice would be Sirius radio (just got the new sportster 5 for Christmas)
after that I'd vote for the Phatbox, which is like swapping music from your computer to your car with a large, somewhat expensive, but well integrated ipod. You could put it in place of the changer, it still works thru the stock radio.

Crud. Lens-cleaning cd didn't work, as far as I can tell. This Phatbox you speak of. It seems that it is a discontinued item, unfortunately. I saw someone mention in another thread I found while searching for an answer called the Gateway, or something to that effect, but it looks like I can only buy those through Quebec. eBay, here I come, I suppose.

Thanks for the help.

According to the manual:

CD* ERR1: CD dirty or improperly installed.
CD* ERR2: CD has scratches.
CD* ERR3: Malfunction in the mechanical system of the CD changer.
