Default Common TT Issues

Hello All, I have searched, but have not found exactly what I have been looking for. I hope that you all could give me a hand. I am looking at picking up a 2002 TT 225 Horse roadster, 6 speed manual with 46K.

All cars have their own common issues; my current car for example (Contour SVT) is known for oil starvation in right turns, and short lived water pumps. What issues are common with the TT. I recall reading a while back about a rear suspension issue, however I do not recall what that was all about? So what common issues and maintainence gremlins do I need to look out for? Is there anything in particular I should look for while inspecting the car?

Thanks in advance for you resplies.

If its got a spoiler, chances are the suspension issue was taken care of. the addition of the spoiler was another recall, as teh car was getting a bit light at excessive speeds, and people were losing control.

Only big deals I can think of off the top of my head are the timing belt and related parts. The timing belt tensioner has been known to fail as early as 60K miles, even though Audi recommends timing belt service at 105K. The water pump impeller origionally was plastic, and has been known to crack/disintegrate. Changing my timing belt, tensioner, eccentric pully, water pump and thermostat at 66K I found my impeller missing a few small pieces.

Earlier model years also had weird clusters, some have had upwards of 3 different instrument clusters fail. Usual signs are improper readings on the needles, to as bad as nothing, not even the trip computer working. If the cluster isn't covered by Audi, it can cost $600-$800 to replace.

One other little quirk is that occasionally, the windows won't close all the way. The TT has a comfort close window, it opens itself about 1/4" when the door is opened (if you didn't notice), that way, when you close the door, you eardrums don't take a beating. Somehow the doors get confused, and the window doesn't close completely. Simple fix to set them right again, closing the windows using the key in the lock seems to set it right.

That should get you started!

Good luck.

Thanks achTTung for the great response. During my test drive yesterday, I did notice something funky with the windows; I thought it was just me hearing things. The window would sometimes drop, but not always. The vehicle I was looking at did not have the spoiler, but speeds are considered "excessive" with regards to the suspension issue? I commute in Los Angeles traffic, so I do not gernerally get above 70 mph. However when I drive to Vegas, I will take it up to 100 or so (any slower and the semi's are gonna run me down!)

What years had the plastic impeller for the water pump? Is there a revised design to replace the plastic impellar? Also does the VW coilpack issue also concern Audi?

Thank You again for the replies?

A 2002 with 46000 huh.. depending on the in-service date it just may still be under warranty. If it is make sure its 40k was done, if under warranty it's free. Also go to Audi and complain about anything that seems "off". I thought the little spoiler was standard after 2000.
