Default CV Joint Quwstion

This past weekend one of my CV joint bolts (driver side inner)broke severing the small metal washer piece that connects the bolt to the one next to it thus severing the boot. I tightened up the bolts (score onefor the sound deadening tray) but lost a bit of grease in process. My question is do I only have to repack the joint and replace the boot or will I have to replace the entire CV joint and if so do both sides have to be done? It is currently a bit noisy and sounds almost like a heat sheild when a weld breaks, although only sparingly and when driving straight and rarely when turning which seems odd. Also if youve done it how long will it take as I have acess to a lift. Unfortunately the Bentley's manual is pretty weak on this subject and this is my first my car with CV axles as I have only owned rear drivers in the past.
Any help would be gretly appreciated.

At what point doyou know if a a new CV joint is needed instead of just having to be repacked with grease. Thanks.
