Default Electrical Problems

Hello all,
I have been having some electrical problems with my 01 TT. Last year it did not strart to I had to use a jumper cable to get it start then I took it to auto zone to check the battery. They said the battery and the alternater is good. The car run fine for a couple of days and I started yesterday morning and the same problem. Does anyone had a similar issue? My car is out of the warranty so taking it to a dealer is my last resort.

Thanks for reading.

Might try checking the alternator. Sounds like it either isnt charging the battery or its not putting out enough juice, causing the battery to supply the majority of the power. Try using a multi meter and see what the out put is.

When you say they checked the battery did they do a drop test on it or just check the V reading with a multi-meter? The battery may show twelve voltes on the multi meter (with out cranking) but still be no good you have to test the voltage under cranking conditions which is what the drop tester dose and if falls bellow 9V it's no good. If your battery is no good and your testing the charge from the alternator you may think that your alternator is putting out a low voltage but it's just the battery. How ever if you have the equipment to do both of these tests and it shows that both are good then you need to start looking for a battery drain while the car is switched off which should be below 0.025A. With all of the ECU's on board it can take up to 2hr for everything to go to sleep and achive this reading. To carry out this test most effectivly you will need an amps clamp.

A good indication for a dead battery is sluggish cranking although I have seen batterys that are so dead that they won't give a reading on the drop tester but still seem to start the car without much problem if the car has been running recently.

check for a draw too. see if somethings drawing power from your battery. ie. like a lite in the glovebox or something to that nature.

Last but not least, battery cables do corode and not all are crimped properly, cheap attempt to fix problem is change NEG. cable, easy. If no then Pos. cable (harder).
If still not fix, at least you have new inexpensive but important parts on board. Try other suggestions above first, if not this is sometimes the problem on any make of car, even Audi.

I had similar problme. the car will start if max leave it unstart 2 days....any longer than that the battery to die, then I will have to jump start it. Back in 2004 before I purchased this car according to the history they found out it was some voltage setting that wasnt correct. It was like on "1" instead of "0"....according to the paperwork it was fixed and no problem.

and now my car has another 7months warranty on it. and problem came back. Now, the first time I took to the dealer they said its bad battery, so I replaced it. 2nd time it wont start- took it back to dealer, they said battery is low, charged it and said come pick up your car. WTF. They said they hooked it up to the computer and nothing came up. Shouldnt they go by previous history and check on that? I might take my car to another dealership and see if they can find the problem.

Having the same problem with my 2001 TT. If I leave it for 6-8 hours it starts fine, but won't start 3 minutes after I turn it off.

Any Clue??

Previous problem on the voltage problem was the I/P guage cluster. According the the history they set the cluster to "0" instead of "1025".....dont really know what that means and what it does. But why cant they check on that on my car. instead of just charge my battery again.
