Changed timing belt, water pump, thermostat, and coolant temp sensor. Obviously flushed and replaced with Audi G12 coolant. Found that my aux coolant pump that runs coolant after car is shutoff had broken wires, repaired and pump runs fine.
Fans do come on when I turn on heater but they do not seem to have an effect on the car temp and also, even with the car reaching H, i do not hear the high speed fan kick in.
AC and Heater seem to work fine.
Started with water pump, thermostat and coolant flush, also fixing the aux pump. After that i found if i do not let the car cool down after driving, i will start to spike temps. Almost like the turbo was overheating the coolant on shutdown then the car wouldnt be able to cool the coolant back down. Shortly after I started experiencing weird temps, Hot to running temp in seconds, running temp to hot in seconds, gauge would display cold and high speed fan would be running with heater off. I thought it must be the coolant temp sensor.
When i replaced the coolant temp sensor, I also replaced the vacuum hoses under the intake due to a leak. (and speed sensor not that its related) Ran the car and it started to overheat again, turned heater on to try and cool car and didnt seem to have an effect, tried AC for the hell of it, and the car freaked out. Gauge went to cold, 49C trick said car was 121C, then called out a low oil alarm, then gauge spiked to Hot, 49C called out 100C, and the car alarmed coolant temp, it would bounce between 121C and 100C instantly giving me same alarms with each instant temp change. Gave up and let it sit overnight, ran it in the morning with cooler air temps and slowly started to overheat, ran heater and had no effect, ran AC and car instantly went to running temp, 49C trick calling out 97C, ran fine.
To my understanding, 51C is the engine temp, not sure what or where that sensor is, but it hasnt changed from 90C while all this goes on, going to check it when engine is cold to see any difference in engine temp.
planning on hooking up to vagcom today to clear CEL from vac leak and going to pull temps from vag to hopefully have a better understanding if my car is overheating or if the temp sensor system is junked
Two suspected issues
1. Gauge cluster, the two issues ive found similar to mine have indicated a bad cluster or bad ground to cluster, which leads me to,
2. I get a little whining as the car revs up which sounds like feedback from the audio system, similar to if you plugged an ipod into aux port with the headphone jack and charged it from the cigarette lighter 12v port, as you rev the car you get a bit a feedback from the alternator, well i get this but with radio on or off, ... so im assuming maybe a bad ground in the entire system? no idea just taking stabs now lol... Any help would be greaaaaat

problem seemingly fixed, pulled the gauge cluster, inspected and put back into car, the plugs in the back of the cluster seem like they clip into place then snap into place, meaning the locking clips do not completely seat the plugs, after ensuring the plugs were seated correctly, havent had any temp issues since, seems like it was just a loose connection between the plugs and gauge cluster probably causing a inconsistent voltage? ... whatever, problem solved lol
