I bought a camera, now i have to figure out how to use it
There was an employee auction at work the other day, I picked up an Olympus OM-2s SLR with a few lenses. I have a zuiko auto-w 35mm, 2 auto-s 50mm, and a Tamron Tele-macro 28-70mm. I also have some extensions, which I think are worthless, because nothing comes into focus with them. I have a 12, 20, and 36mm Vivitar extensions. I also got a Vivitar SL-2 remote flash sensor, and a Vivitar zoom thyristor 285 flash. Also in the fancy Olympus camera bag was a few filters, Tiffen 80A, 80B, FL-D, and "enhancing filter", also a Hoya 'PL', which I think is a polarizing filter?
In all, after tax cost me $81.00 So occasionally, I guess I DO have some good luck. Now I just have to learn how to use it. I have absolutely no experience with a 35mm camera. Hell, I don't even have a digital camera. Anything I've taken pics of has been with the <1 megapixal still image setting on my Handycam. I've taken 8 pics so far mostly of the dog, trying the different lenses. This first roll of film is entirely experimental, just random shots of household stuff, just so I can get a feel for it. Only trouble so far is getting the flash to go off. I think its a hot shoe (theres contacts there) but it doesn't work. I'm gonna try to get a cable that would plug between the flash and camera, as if i didn't have a hot shoe. Just to see if that works.

Yeah, figured he'd probably post eventually, but I figured I'd post up my list of stuff incase there was any other photographers lurking around.
I Froogle'd everything last night, the full list adds up to about $950. Not too shabby.

I can't get over the fact you've never used 35mm before.... How old are you?
Reading this however made me think about the three years I took photography in college. It's only been a year since I haven't taken a photo class... but I don't remember as much as I should. Especially considering the fact that I might go into photography as a profession... just haven't decided yet.
You did get one hell of a deal though on all that equipment. My 35mm cam + one lense cost me around $450. That being the cheapest I could find at that moment. I had an even better one... but it got stolen out of my car (disadvantage to having a convertable and leaving the top down).

not a bad little deal ... as you say experiment .. the best photgraphers are self taught ... when it comes to setting it read the manual or buy a book or 2 .. and most of all have fun and learn as you go !!

While I agree with the last post remember that you do need some sort of basic fundamental training, such as color concepts...etc
as for invested ...you dont even wanna guess what I have invested...arg....upwards of $5000/6000 not including editing software... thats just my camera and a few lens's

damn....
MN, I'm 24, its not like 'oh wow, a 35mm! Its so old and mysterious!!!'
I've never owned ANY camera before, with exception to the handycam, which by chance takes cell phone quality stills.
If it makes you feel any better, I do own a couple 8-tracks, and still think vinyl sounds better than CD's. I almost bought a Technics direct drive, linear tracking turntable with some of my Christmas bonus last year, but I ended up paying bills instead. (Bills always get in the way)
