so how long have some timing belts lasted?

im at 70k+ miles on an original belt... i know its recommended every 60k but as of now replacing it is not an option, my parents said they wont help either until 80k miles which a mechanic once told them...

thoughts?

p.s. - i got my parents to agree to rebuild my engine if it breaks before 80k but i really dont want to have to go through the hassle if you know what i mean

Mine i believe was orginal when i had the engine rebuilt at 105k miles. My brothers was just changed on his passat 1.8t and he was at around 108k last time i checked. His was finally changed since his wp took a dump (better than the tensioner).

I don't think i ever remembered seeing a TT with a 105k miles with the original timing belt on it. All the TT's i had to fix with broken timing belts had around 90K on the clock.

Mine is at 97k getting replaced now but was still good

It's not usually the belt that is bad. The tensioner or the water pump are usually the first modes of failure.

mine was 110k and was still perfect, but figured it was a ticking time bomb and replaced it 2k ago

Personally I wouldn't try to stretch it out that long. The first thing I did when I bought the car was replace the tensioner, belt, and water pump !!! I've heard of belts not even lasting 60k, but like u said they'll rebuild it if the belt brakes......good luck !!!
