I used a set of channel locking pliers...worked fine for me. But i had the bumper removed along with the radiator fan cowl, battery, battery housing, etc. Makes working with your cooling system so much easier. Also have you changed out your thermostat?. Oh and i meant to respond to you eariler but yes the 1.8 Awp at least in the 2003 version does have a auxillary water pump that functions after your turn off your tt. You can hear it if you listen closely again im referencing my 2003 Not sure if this applies to the 2001 model.

i did change the thermostat already... i should have stuck my hand in the block to check the impeller, but i forgot to do that.

hmmm, all threads and other info state that the after run pump is only on the 225 only. but, i'll listen more carefully.

the switch is actually 29mm, so i don't have any tool to take the switch out. Found a deep socket in 1/2" drive, but it's way too deep to use with limited access.

There is plenty of room after taking out the battery AND battery tray. i took the connector off only to find out it's a Triangular connector!! I ordered and received a square connector.

Found a triangle one today, so i'll pick that up and try and find a proper tool. Maybe i have enough access for locking pliers or an adjustable wrench, but i'd like to be offset, since i don't know if those will work right out of the gates.

yeah its a triangular one and i think i got mine for about 15 bucks or so from autohausAZ. Ideally i would've like to have used a 22 deep socket would've made life much easier but you know how it is with cars sometimes you just have to make due with what you got. Also i think ill post of a pic of the auxiliary water pump that I'm talking about...its sole function is cooling turbo after you've turned the engine off. I think you'd know what I'm talking about so perhaps your year maybe just didn't have it? Ive had to essentially rebuild the cooling system in my 2003 audi so unfortunately I'm a bit too familiar with the whole system.

Hello All,
I’ll write directly to the current issue because I have same stats as author described and I don’t know is this normal behavior or not. You may be asking why not, I’ll tell you mine concerns. A have audi 1.8t 2001 180HP from month and half and I read a lot technical literature and will tell you my observation. Before scheduled maintains I found that thermostat didn’t closing tightly and when I driving down the hill temperature goes down around 85 degrease so I knew I have problems with it so I request to mine fitter to include it in next scheduled maintains. In traffic jam temp goes up to 104-105 degrees (this is info from climate control panel, code 49 which is displaying coolant temperature. Old thermostat serial number is 050121113c Temperature Degree 87C - 102C which means that thermostat begin opening at 87 degrees and it is fully opened at 102 which from other hand means that it is normal for me fans to kicks in at 104 degreas. Am I right? After changing all of the parts belts, water pump, thermostat, rolls….) same story.

Please post your comments and your observations if you have it.

If it heats up in traffic jams and cools down when ur moving its ur fans plain and simple. Now there are several things that can be affecting how your fans are operating all the way down to the fans themselves. I encourage you to do some testing of your connections and various switches, etc. With that being said the author of this thread and I have gone over a few of those possibilities. Please feel free to review it to help narrow down ur problem.

Hi,

Thanks for you suggestion. I think my fans are working pretty well. As i described there is temperature levels which when temperature goes above (kick in) and when temperature goes down (fans stops). My temperature goes down to down level that thermostat close (87 degrees). I didn't tell you that my dashboard temperature is constantly on 90 degrees and I'm pretty sure that dashboard temp and climate control panel temp are taking his information from different sensors attached in the car (one is attached in radiator, other is attached direct in engine), that’s why I'm asking some of you that have audi 1.8T (a3, TT, golf IV) (without A4 - they use other visco fans, electric too) to share here his statistics.

Cheers
