Only possible swaps without 1000's of hours of fab work and money are:

1.9L TDI
2.8L VR6 (either 12 or 24V)
3.2 VR6

All the parts can easily be had and made to fit.

BTW, the 1.8t is great for up to 400whp with min lag, stroking it to 2.0L is a smart move if you want to go above that.
