ALL 911's have been flat or "boxer" 6's since the car first came out in what, 1967? And all of them are rear engine, not mid engine because the engine sits behind the rear axel, not in front or on top of it. The design was used because it has to be for an air cooled engine. V engines require liquid cooling. But it has one other major advantage as well. with all the parts parallel to the ground, the center of gravity of the engine and therefor the car is lower that inline or V engines. That also means the engine is so low to the ground that you can put it completely under the car. That is how the Caymen is done. Unlike most mid-engines cars where the engine has it's own bay and a little trunk behind it, the engine sits completely under the hatchback area of the car. Guess were you put the oil in? Yup, through a little carpeted door on the floor of the interior! And Porsche has gotten so good with the boxer, even when they went with liquid cooling, they retained the boxer design for it's other advantages.
