Where did you take it? I would have an VW specific shop look at it. The shop might not want to dig-in or rebuild an engine this complex.

If you do need a new (used) engine, I might seriously concider scrapping the car or putting repairing it on hold for a while. I guess it depends on the condition of the car. Atleast the 180HP model should be a bit cheaper to replace, as it's more common.

I actually just found an import shop that is willing to do the repairs. I'll be towing it there later this week.

And I did consider that too. The car is in pristine condition though and after just purchasing it last month, it's hard to want to part with it.
But I've been quoted at $4600 for the engine and labor. From what I've researched that seems like a pretty fair price. They'll be putting a new timing belt on too. The cost definitely hurts but I suppose it could have been much worse.

I should have been more clear- the grand total includes a remanufactured engine, install/labor, and timing belt.
