Default No 1st or 2nd gear?

I just got my car out of the garage after 8months of procrastinating with maintenance and custom work. I was on my way to the bank for a cruise and everything was smooth, i get into the parking lot and i go to put it back in first. Nothing 1st and 2nd gear wouldn't catch. They into place, but no clicking into place feeling just loose. 3rd-6th work and reverse. I took out my airbox and looked at the linkage. Everything looks alright...Any suggestions on what to do next? or what it could be?

I am having a problem with my shifter right now too. Mine is stuck in the 1st gear position though and I cant even drive it. I wonder if it is a similar malfunction to yours? If I get any advice I will let you know...

Good luck!!!

Your 1/2 shift fork flange which catches with the shift rod in the transmission has fallen off. Sounds like it didn't hit any other gear, which is good!

This LITERALLY just happened to me (I got '01 TT Quattro) and I am freaking pissed with Audi for using such a cheap *** rivet to hold this **** in place. Cost me 1.5K to open it up, replace the fork with a stronger bolt, and put it all back together. I want to sue audi so bad. Good luck!

Oh, bpdeleon, same thing most likely happened to you except the flange/broken rivet that falled off got stuck in the gears....Don't start that **** up and try to move, keep it in neutral the whole time. Hopefully there isn't too much damage to the gears...

My linkage was dry rotted and I was stuck in 4th gear just this past weekend.
In the shop as we speak. 118,000 miles and 10yrs old
Yes! pretty shitty linkage. You would think it would last a lifetime.
Wonder if AOA can do anything?

This just happened to me as well. Broken shift fork. The shift fork is cheap, I think it was only $150 part...but it's expensive to get it put in.
