Default Removing Front License Plate Cover

Hello All

Now that my new TT is finally about to go legal here in Ontario, I was wondering if anyone knows the method for removing the front "Euro" plate cover? We are are stuck mounting a front plate here and I don't wish to just drill right into the bumper over top of the cover.

Cheers,

John

Great!where, how, how hard etc....I looked at it today and tried to pry it out a little but not knowing how it's mounted, I didn't want to risk scratching my paint or breaking the thing in half...

pull. hard. : )

grab by the bottom edge, it makes terrible noises coming out, but you wont break it.

yup..pull. you can try a small blade screwdriver as a pry bar...but not really needed. its held on with little tabs two on each side and like 4-5 on teh long edges.

I found it best to start prying at the upper left and right corners (where there's a radius), not at the bottom. I'm paranoid about breaking all this cheap brittle (and expensive) plastic crap, so go easy. After you pull the cover you'll find round depressions molded into the plastic where you'll drill holes for screws that hold the plate bracket. Here's a little trick; cut slots in the threaded ends of the screws, push the threaded ends through the holes (toward the front), then replace the cover. At this point the screws will be flopping around loose but they won't push through. Put the plate bracket in place over the protruding screws, start the nuts, then hold the screws with a screwdriver using the slots you cut while you tighten thenuts with a box wrench. I forgot the exact length but one of the standard hardware store metric sizes fits perfectly so you don't have to cut the screws to length. Be sure to buy stainless hardware.

So I decided to take Dana's advice and take the cover off, it had never been off before so it took a bit of work but not as hard as I anticipated it would be. I ended up drilling holes through the plastic rectangle and mounting the plate directly on the front without a bracket...I used 3/8" length screws because there isn't much clearance on the other side of the plate. I figure that since the cover is on so securely, that this would suffice. Thanks again for all the advice, my new TT is finally complete
