If its covered, make them change it BEFORE it breaks then.
Correct me if there is one but I am unaware of any warranty , original or extended , that will cover the replacement of a TB before it breaks. This falls under the "wear and tear" clause in most I believe.
correct

RE: Timing Belt Vs. Extended Warranty
Yeah, extended warrantee will not cover it. At least not at a dealership (speaking from experience).
If it is a third party warrantee you can call them and ask if it's a mechanical warrantee (or maybe you already know this).
A mechanical warrantee should cover it. Call them, tell them that you're 60k service interval is approaching and list to them the "required" maintenance that needs to be preformed.
Just make sure you mention a timing belt, water pump, and tensioner. It's common knowledge that most timing belts get changed at 60K.
So, I doubt they will really question you. Although they may want want a mechanic to look first and see what needs to be done.
If they don't cover you well, at least you tried!
If you get the coverage you could then take it to a shop you feel comfortable to do the work (or they'll tell you where to take it).
Not sure if they give you the cash or request a bill. You'd have to find that out.

Definitely get it done soon, and keep us updated!
Best of luck to ya!

RE: Timing Belt Vs. Extended Warranty
I can tell you if it is a third party warranty service that it may end up being more headaches than it is worth. I had a 1991 MR2 that the dealership talked me into getting an extended warranty with. About a month after ownership the turbo started spraying oil. I thought well,I guess that was what I have the warranty for. However, in hindsight i would have been better off just paying for the repairs myself.

It started off with me taking it to a shop. It turned out all the warranty companywould authorize to be replaced was a rebuilt turbo from a vendor of their choosing. This happened to be a place that had to have been the cheapest rebuilder in China. The shop had my car for 3 months because ever turbo the rebuilder sent out had some problem with it. The warranty company wouldn't even let me pay the difference to upgrade to a different vendor.

After finally getting the car back with a supposedly good turbo, Itook it out for a road trip. On my way backfrom Vegas I heardwhat sounded like a shot gunblast followed by whatcould have been a bunch of bb's bouncing around behind my head followed by within a second of a screeching sound andthen engine seizing. It turned out afterI got my car towed back that the turbine disintegrated and parts of it sucked through to the engine. Little bits of metal then got caught in the pistons and valves and caused all kinds of damage. The warranty house then deigned the claim saying they would replace the Turbo, but not the engine as I should have stopped faster. Keep in mind this all happened in a few seconds and the initial sound had me ducking my head and trying to figure out what just happened.

It took a lot of court time and attorney fees to finally get a judgment against them even though to this day (5 years later and they are still in business) I still have not seen a dime from them as they are appealing it again.

So anyway, read the fine print, be ready for a hassle and extended downtime if something does go wrong, and good luck.
