define no first or second gear... Were you having problems with it before? Like was it hard to get in or out of those gears? 1-2 should be on the same syncro but if you had 0 problems i doubt that problem would just magically appear. Can you not get it go go into those gears or can you put it in but nothing happens?
You can try checking your shifter linkage? But if that were the problem you would have issues in all gears.

I cant imagine you just losing 2 gears... Hopefully it is something simple to fix. Im sure someone with more knowledge about trannys will chime in.

my 97 A8 has gone into what they call a fail safe mode which doesn't shift. Do you have dash lighted gear selection display. If so are all the gears lit up?

First, check the shift linkage. this is under the intake. If it's loose or disconnected, it's an easy fix. Have someone see if it's moving when you shift into first/second. If it's moving normally...then the fun begins.

My guess is if it's not in the linkage, the 1st/2nd gear shift collar is off of the shifter fork for some reason or another.
