whens the best time to shift gear?
I have a 01 TT 225 with APR chip, Samco hoses, Forged FMIC, and Im boosting 23psi. I want to know at what rpm's shouldI launch and at what rpm's should I shift? With Apr the shifting went to 7200 but I feel like Im losing boost after 6500!
Do you have the samco turbo inlet hose? Hell I didnt even know you could go that high, i mean redline starts at around 6400. Why would you even go that far? All I know is that after you chip the car, the stock turbo inlet hose has been known to collapse around 5500 or somewhere around there. If you already have that hose than i'm not sure, but I would shift way earlier than 7200.
Well if you have the turbo inlet hose upgrade you can shift past 5500 but i wouldn't redline it. So i guess thats around 6000-6400. If you dont have the upgrade hose, than i would shift at about 5k. I'm no pro though, there are a lot more people on here who have had these cars longer than me but thats just my opinion. I'd wait a day to see what everyone has to say.
General rule: shift when there's nothing more to be gained by revving it higher. You can tell by the "seat of your pants;" when you go past the power peak the engine will gain rpm more slowly. There's absolutely no point in straining for the last few rpm; all you're doing at that point is stressing the engine unnecessarily.
On a 225 with andwithout chip I did a few runs and found shifting at about 6200-6300 to be the best. Peak power comes at 5900rpm and begins to decline at about 6200-6400. This seems to avoid bogging and overevving past the point of productivity.
For launching I recommend turning the ESP off and slipping the clutch out in the low 3000s right as the turbo is fully spooled up. If your going to do any road racing or autocross events which are far cooler than drag racing just focus on hitting the shift when you are in the low 6000s as you have other things to focus on such as braking, turning, and moving your feet. This will be good enough.
As to the redline issue the fuel cut off does not actually occur at the posted redline but 300-400rpm higher. Why I have no idea but unless you had a bigger turbo or a longer duration cams I doubt the slightly higher rpms would help.

I have an 02 180 FWD with the K03 "sport" turbo and a chip, intake and MAF mod... My shifts seem to feel the strongest right around 6500 rpms. Don't think that all TTs are the same... due to their tuning, its completely up to the butt dyno.
