Theres several theories like that. The one I hear most commonly is every 100lbs is a tenth of a second on the 1/4. Like Outtie said its a generalization, but its not completely false.

is pretty accurate. every 100lbs.= about 10HP= about .1 in the 1/4= about 1mph in the quarter.
