1997 a4 quattro central locking inop
Hi all,
When I picked up this A4 there was only one key with it. No fob. The seller said the central locking feature didn't work due to a relay failure. Is that common with these cars? The other question I have is why the drivers door/ignition key won't turn in the trunk lock. Is there a separate key for the trunk? As it stands now, there's no way for me to open the trunk lid except for entry through the back seat. Is there a specific relay that needs to be changed? Does anyone have a location of the relay? Could it be the drivers door latch assy where the problem lies? One thing I did find out by accident. When leaning under the hood near the back of the engine compartment looking for the master clutch I somehow tripped the alarm system.
Then when I put the key in the ignition, it wouldn't shut it off. I finally tried putting the key in the drivers door and when I rotated it counterclockwise it shut off the alarm so I'm thinking the drivers door latch is working to some degree. Anyone dealt with this on the A4? Thanks.

Sou ds very similar to what happened when I bought my car, locked the door went to unlock, but alarm did not disarm. The only reason I can see for the trunk not using the same key is that the lock on the door is not the same as the trunk, or visa versa. For my car, it ended up being that the connectors for the central locking pump had corroded and comp, leted locked down my car, does yours still start?
jeckel,
Thanks for the reply. I had a valet key for my 96 Passat GLX and wondered the same thing. I guess I could call a dealership to see if they could make a key. I'm sure it would be expensive but there aren't many other options I can see.
