Default 2001 Audi 2.8

Quick question went out looking at some audi's today. We went into a dealer and the owner said that the Audi 2.8 came with a Timing chain so therefore it did not need to be changed. He stated only 1.8t a4's had belts. Just wondering if its true? Is a timing Chain common in 2001 A4's? Are they reliable? Should it be changed in the 75k -100k mile range? Car has 114k miles body looks good interior is also nice minus the pixel fading in the dash. Any Information helps. Thanks..

The 2.8 has a belt for sure. I would see why the 1.8 would be any different.

According to the service manual, it should be changed at 100k miles.

I just had mine done at 90k. It's well worth it to have other work done as well since you will be in there.
tensioners
pulleys
water pump
thermostat
other belts

To have shop do all this work, (depending on where you live), you're looking at $1400 on up.

My 99.5 has a timing belt, it was changed at around 100K. The 2001 should have the same engine, AHA. It is located under the belt covers in the front of the engine.

Umm, I'm not familiar with the 01 2.8, but I think this guy is either blowing smoke up your ***, or is a complete idiot... Don't walk away, RUN!!!

Next he'll tell you it has some super space aged, NASA style spark plugs and some futuristic oil and neither of them ever need to be changed...
