Open the trunk and pull out the spare tire from the well under the removable panel and look at the tag glued to the side of the well where the tire is. About in the middle of the tag there will be a line that says engine code/trans code and there will be a series of letters there, like AFC CJP, or some other codes. The First is the engine code (AFC) the second is the trans code. My 96 Quattro says CJP which is a 4:11 geared awd ZF transmission, yours being a 2WD will probably have a different series of letters.
Check your transmission fluid, which is a real pain in the butt to do, but its the cheapest fix, if its low the transmission will either slip like mad, or not engage 1st or reverse unless you really rev the engine up.
